Choose by suitability before appearance
There is no single best roof for every San Rafael building. A material that suits a sloped main roof may not suit a low-slope addition. Start with the roof geometry, structure and existing conditions, then compare appearance, maintenance and warranty options.

Shingles versus tile
Composition shingles and tile have different weight, detailing and maintenance considerations. If you are changing material types, ask whether the structure and roof assembly are suitable. With tile, look beyond visible pieces to underlayment and flashing. With shingles, discuss compatible accessories, fastening and attic ventilation.
TPO versus built-up roofing
Both can be considered for suitable low-slope assemblies, but they are different systems. Compare existing layers, moisture conditions, attachment, insulation, drainage and rooftop access. Request a complete system proposal so that seams, edges, curbs and penetrations are part of the comparison.
Cool roofing is a performance characteristic
Cool roofing is not limited to one material family. Ask for product ratings and whether the proposed assembly meets requirements for the actual building and project. Light color alone is not a substitute for verified performance or a sound roof underneath.
Questions that make the choice easier
Ask why a product suits your roof, which alternatives were considered, how difficult details will be handled and what care is required after installation. Compare the written warranty for the complete system. A longer advertised material warranty does not automatically mean broader workmanship coverage.
